The Benchmark Index

As Accountants, our clients often ask us, are we doing better or worse in comparison to our rivals? Historically, this has been difficult to answer, as all the information available has been aimed at big companies and not trade specific. In other words, issues facing a retail business are very different to those facing a manufacturing industry. The Governments, Small Business Service has attempted to provide a solution in an Initiative called Benchmark Index. Essentially, this is a diagnostic tool to help you identify where you can make improvements to your business and which have been identified as performing below average, compared to others in your chosen sector.

The Benchmark Index helps show you, where your business is now in relation to performance and its competitors:

• It provides a solid foundation for improvements and helping to create a focused action plan.
  
• It encourages a measurement culture in your organisation.
  
• It is a tool to help identify specific areas where you need to focus on improvement, compared with your peers.
